VIGNETTE SEVEN

Quentins hands are wonderful to view, especially the one taken during one of their afternoons together at Cooper Square Diner and at home. The other images are a selection of a series Marty took of Mr. Crisp in the act of becoming Quentin Crisp. First, though, it was the morning pour of Guinness into his 1947 mug with the naked image of himself holding a daisy and with the quote, wrapping around the cup, Be gay rather than wise. Also, preparing his face with makeup and lipstick was only one of the aspects of this daily action which took nearly threes hours to do. Traveling with Quentin was wonderful, because I witnessed this amazing magic every morningfrom his soiled dressing gown to the familiar polished image.
